One of the very first times I met Courtney, I was wearing a workout outfit (leggings, wind breaker jacket, tennis shoes, and all) since I was on my way to a cycling class after our student org meeting. To this day, Courtney and I still laugh about it because I do not think I have gone to a cycling class nor worn a workout outfit with her since. It is rather ironic how our dynamic duo style began three years ago because now we always make sure to have a dress code so we can coordinate looks with the other person.

The inspiration for this photo shoot and blog post was derived from my friendship with Courtney. We met when we were nineteen years old and Sophomores in the Textile and Apparel Design program. We both were in the same student org and we clicked right away. Our friendship bloomed over Snapchat and quickly turned into weekly Taco Tuesday dates after class. We bonded over everything from fashion to social media to politics to sassy boyfriends to Sex and the City (Courtney is Carrie and I am Charlotte and we both have a touch of Samantha) and most importantly, our love of wine and champagne. We created our own column for Moda Magazine the summer of 2014, we both interned in NYC the summer of 2015, we both recently graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in May 2016, and we both have tremendously enjoyed living a short car ride away from each other for the past 6 months. To say the least, we have kind of been inseparable.

One of the things I have really enjoyed about our friendship is how our personal styles have evolved together. Courtney has always encouraged me to try mixing in fun, exciting pieces to my classic wardrobe and I have inspired her to pare down her wardrobe and really help pinpoint her personal style. We both LOVE getting dressed up with each other and always find an excuse to throw on a LBD, head to dinner, and sip on wine while we chat about life.

I designed the silky slips for this shoot and the black pearl embellished coat I wore but I really wanted Courtney to wear her infamous feather coat to complete the look. Every time Courtney wears this jacket, she leaves a trail of a million little feathers wherever she goes! Yes, it is just as magical as it sounds except when you are cleaning your apartment and find Courtney's feathers MONTHS later hiding in the corners of your room. I think they are fun little reminders of memorable nights so I don't mind the feathers one bit!

I think it is so important to have close girlfriends and I really wanted to showcase that with this post. It is so fun to have a style partner in crime and even more fun to look back at how our style has evolved over the past three years. Fashion is fun and Courtney and I always try to implement that into our daily dressing. We both are so very excited to be jet setting off to NYC in exactly one week from today and cannot wait to share our adventure with all of you!

**In honor of BFF fashion, I thought it would be fun to do a little dynamic duo style competition. Leave a comment and photo of you and your best friend showing off your personal styles and I will include one dynamic duo in the post along side Courtney and myself this Wednesday!

The title of this post definitely speaks for itself because I feel like I am on cloud nine when I am wearing this Swiss dot, white tulle, tiered mini cocktail dress. I first saw this dress when Margo & Me flaunted it for a Halloween gala a few weeks back and I just knew I had to have it the moment I saw it!

I wanted to style this dreamy dress with sparkly details and pops of red to kickoff the holiday season look book. Trust me, there will be numerous pops of red this month since red truly is the epitome of Christmas! As I had previously mentioned, I did NOT design or construct this dress but I thought it was just too magical of a dress not to share.

My favorite things about the holiday season are all of the gorgeous decorations, the twinkling outdoor Christmas lights, crackling fires, listening to Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra, and spending quality time with close family and friends. This year I am very excited because in two short weeks I will be jet setting off to NYC with my gal pal and partner in crime, Courtney Pelot. We both have always wanted to see NYC during the holiday season so we decided to go this year to celebrate Courtney's birthday. We have dubbed it #23inNYC! I even decided to dedicated a special post to our trip that will be released on Courtney's official birthday, December 16th!

Here is our #23inNYC bucket list:

1. Gazing at the Bergdorf Goodman holiday windows

2. Watching the ice skaters at Wollman Rink and Rockefeller Center

3. Drinking frozen hot chocolate at Serendipity III

4. Sipping on bubbly at the Plaza's Champagne Bar

5. Staying warm while enjoying some hot tea and delicious macarons at Laduree in SoHo

6. Shopping like Blair Waldorf at Henri Bendel

7. Taking a break from 5th Ave shopping and sipping on a latte at Ralph's

8. Binge eating the most delicious doughnuts from Dough

9. Trying an Apple Betty (almond milk cappuccino with house made apple syrup and spices) from Toby's Estate Coffee

10. Strolling through the Bryant Park winter village

CLOUD NINE PART I

Mood board and illustration by Madalyn Manzeck. 2016.

If there ever was a dress that was a physical manifestation of a dreamy cloud, this would be it!  I did NOT design and construct this dress but I still wanted to create a mood board and illustration. I am trying to create more physical mood boards in my sketchbook so I can have a physical portfolio of my process in addition to a digital one.

I personally have always had a difficult time documenting my design process. It is not because it does not happen nor that I do not like it, but I have always struggled with allowing myself to share thoughts, ideas, designs, drawings, etc. that are still "in the works." I have always thought once it is finished, then I will share it which is a completely silly mindset to possess. So I am trying my very best to show more of the process. I mean that was the whole idea of this blog space in the first place!

Even for garments I do not make, I still will include sketches, drawings, and mood boards. Essentially designing backwards which is an amazing design challenge in and of itself.

This is one of my favorite dresses that I have ever owned simply because it is so unique and a combination of many of my favorite things: tulle, Swiss dots, tiered layers, fun sleeves, illusion neckline, and a bow tie around the neck. I simply cannot wait to share the entire look with you all on Wednesday but for not I will leave you with the mood board and sketch. Enjoy!

Happy (almost) Thanksgiving! It truly is hard to believe that it is Thanksgiving Day tomorrow. These past couple of months have flown by! I personally am enjoying the cooler temperatures and more wintry weather. Thanksgiving means that Christmas is right around the corner and the entire holiday season is my favorite time of the year. There is just so much to celebrate and give thanks for this time of year!

I am excited to finally reveal the woven poncho look today! I thought it would be the perfect Thanksgiving look and hopefully provide a bit of Turkey Day outfit inspiration. The poncho look is perfect for concealing your food baby needs post sweet potato and pumpkin pie binge eating. I always try to wear something with a little extra room. ;)

Like I had mentioned in Poncho Play Part I, I hand wove this poncho on a floor loom. This poncho is very special to me because it did take several weeks of hard work to weave. If I ever had to sell it, it would come with a pretty hefty price tag since it is a one of kind piece. I wanted to create a subtle plaid by mixing yarns with various textures in both the warp and the weft, and of course, the tassel fringe made for the perfect finishing touch.

I styled the look down for a more casual approach. I really love the concept of taking a bespoke, one of a kind, expensive piece and styling it with a pair of jeans. It makes the unique piece feel more approachable and wearable. I added a pair of nude heels, a fur stole, and some sunnies and I was good to go!

Now that I have some outfit inspiration, I am all set to focus on Thanksgiving traditions. I love to re-watch the Gossip Girl Thanksgiving episodes, watch the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade, and run in the Turkey Trot with my family in the morning. It makes me feel like I earned my Thanksgiving feast!

What are some of your Thanksgiving Day traditions? Do you always bake a pie with your dad like Blair Waldorf or do you prefer a more unconventional diner meal complete with French fries like the Van Der Woodsen family?

Happy Thanksgiving!

Not only do I want Styled By Madalyn Joy to be a source of design inspiration, but I also want it to be a wealth of knowledge. I was fortunate enough to attend the University of Wisconsin-Madison and to have the opportunity to learn so many new things from such intelligent people. I felt it was my duty to now share what I learned with all of you!

Many people pass off fashion as being a topic that is irrelevant to them. I always respond by saying, “Everyone owns and wears clothes! We truly all are affected and impacted by the fashion and textile industries.” Unless someone would grow their own cotton (and indigo), harvest it, spin it, weave it, and sew it, even the manliest of men rely on the fashion industry for their jeans! I thought Poncho Play would be the perfect post to introduce the world of weaving since the poncho featured is one that I hand wove on a floor loom.

One of the most beneficial courses I took during my undergraduate studies was Weaving 1 + 2 taught by the talented Marianne Fairbanks. It truly is so important to learn the basic knit and weave structures since they are the foundation for every textile and fabric produced. Also, it is fascinating to think back to the origins of fabric. “Was it a quest for protection from the elements, a desire for power and prestige, or simple modesty that made them take this step?” (Held, p 4). Clothing has literally been in existence since the beginning of time, even if the first garments were made of fig leaves.

Another topic that I find incredibly interesting is the meaning of fabric and clothing. It is a form of nonverbal communication that can convey a message just as loud, if not louder, than speaking. “For thousands of years fabrics have symbolized power, authority, humanity, social position, success on the battlefield, spiritual attitudes, economic position, and the adoration of the body,” (Held, p 11). All of these symbols and beliefs are communicated through a woven fabric and/or garment.

What I really wanted to convey with this woven poncho was the hand craft of weaving and the time and attention to detail involved in a time consuming process. In a world where fast fashion is all the rage, it is refreshing to slow down and spend some time working on a quality garment. “Contrary to Western thinking, which typically privileges efficiency, weaving was not necessarily approached in the most expedient fashion,” (Valoma, p 45-46). Weaving is comprised of various extremely detailed and laborious steps and it was a privilege to thoroughly enjoy each and every step of the process in a classroom setting.

For this poncho, I took my inspiration from the delicate and quaint nature of the English countryside, the pastel hues of Mark Rothko’s Pink on Pink and Untitled Grey Paintings, the always magical tassel, and the resurgence of the poncho trend that occurred last fall (2015) when I designed and wove this poncho.

I am so excited to share the completed look with you all on Wednesday, but for now enjoy the inspiration, illustrations, and the little history lesson on weaving!

My bordeaux dreams have finally become a reality! This evening gown was such a fun project to work on, not only because it is the most magical color and fabric, but also because it was my bridesmaid dress for Anna and Andrew's wedding (good friends from high school) this past October.

They had a beautiful Pinterest country chic wedding and I mean that in the best possible way. Your jaw dropped when you walked into the reception space! The reception was held in a beautiful old barn with charming, twinkling lights strung across the rafters and white pumpkins and maroon mums filled the entire venue. Burlap and white, lacy details were used throughout the tables and flickering candles lined the walls to give the space a truly romantic feel. My favorite part, however, was the pie bar! Instead of having a traditional wedding cake, Anna and Andrew opted for a variety of pies, including pumpkin, berry, apple, and pecan, so the guests could try a couple of different flavors. Let's just say I tried almost every flavor. ;)

When I was thinking about styling this look for after the wedding, I really looked to Renoir's portraits of women for inspiration. I truly loved the French sun hats and black choker necklaces the women wore in Renoir's paintings and wanted to emulate that in my look. Ultimately, shoes were deemed unnecessary for a stroll on the beach so a sun hat and shoulder bag were the only accessories needed. I definitely am looking forward to finding more events to wear this dress for!

Bordeaux dreams is all about the sumptuous, moody colors of fall and the dreamy silhouettes, like floor length satin evening gowns, that make us swoon. This dress was originally designed and constructed to be my bridesmaid dress for my good friend Anna's wedding this past October, but I also wanted a style that was classic, timeless, and it could be worn again and again.

My main source of silhouette inspiration came from Jenny Cipoletti's rehearsal dinner look that she wore last summer during her wedding festivities in France (Margo & Me). The silhouette was simple, elegant, and timeless. I obviously made some changes to my design but I wanted to capture the overall look and feel of the dress.

The color inspiration came from Anna's love of a rich bordeaux color that she wanted to incorporate into her wedding through the bridesmaid dresses. I looked to some of my favorite artists such as Mark Rothko, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Auguste Rodin for color palette and styling inspiration. I was particularly influenced by Renoir's 20th century women and their black choker necklaces, floor length dresses, and French straw sun hats. Most people think the black choker trend is "so 90s" when in reality French women have been rocking the trend since the mid 1800s. It is a tried and true fashion lesson that nothing is new and EVERYTHING does come back into style!

Stay tuned for the completed garment look coming this Wednesday!

Bonjour! Today I am sharing the final look that was inspired by my love of all things classic and Parisian chic. Originally I thought it was silly to be sharing a fur coat and boots last week then a chiffon off the shoulder dress this week, but it actually make complete sense based off the weather here in the Midwest. One day it is literally 50 degrees and windy and the next day it is 70 degrees and sunny! That's the Midwest for you! It does make getting dressed in the morning a fun and exciting challenge. ;)

I stumbled upon this finely pleated black chiffon fabric and immediately knew I wanted to make a long sleeved little black dress (LBD). With cooler days approaching I knew the long sleeves would come in handy but the lightweight nature of the chiffon makes it perfect for warmer temperatures too! A versatile LBD that can be worn all year round and endlessly styled sounds just like the perfect wardrobe staple. I threw on this red scarf and sun hat to give the look a true Parisian feel and added a red handbag and heels for a pop of color.

Finally, the best part is the dress and scarf are for sale! I linked the dress and scarf to the eBay listing where the items are available for purchase.

Hope you all have a fabulous rest of your week and thanks for stopping by!

Bonjour! Welcome to the world of all things unabashedly feminine and Parisian chic!

I wanted to begin by explaining a little bit about how the sharing of the design process will work here on Styled By Madalyn Joy. Every Friday morning I will be posting an Instagram teaser (@styledbymadalynjoy) of the inspiration board for the look that will be posted the following week. This will give you all a little taste of what is to come!

Each blog post will consist of two parts: inspiration/illustration and the completed look. Every Monday I will post the inspiration/illustration and on every Wednesday I will share the completed look. It is especially important to follow along on Instagram because that is where you will be able to see the inspiration, illustration, and completed look all in a progression side by side. I still get chills when I see the design come to life!

The inspiration behind this week's look is quite obviously Parisian chic, but more specifically I drew inspiration from Blair Eadie of Atlantic Pacific, Coco Chanel, The Ritz Paris, seaside living, classic black and white tile floors, and the essence of Parisian chic herself, Jenny Cipoletti of Margo & Me. There is just something so effortless about Parisian style that makes it truly aspirational.

My guesses are that if you are reading this post, you absolutely adore Parisian chic style too! What are your favorite aspects of Parisian style!? The black and white stripes? The pops of red? The ability to eat croissants and macarons and still look runway ready? If you have the answer to the last one, please share because I am dying to know!

Au Revoir!

As the title suggests, hello and welcome to Styled By Madalyn Joy! I am so incredibly happy to have you all here to join me in this exciting new adventure!

Styled By Madalyn Joy is a fashion design blog that will document the design process and give you a behind the scenes look on creating garments from start to finish. This first post will be a little different since I am not wearing any of my designs but rather showcasing my personal style and daily uniform (classic black on black styled with denim, luxe faux fur, fine leather goods, and pops of red beauty details). This first post is a warm welcome to all you readers and is an oh so big thank you to the person who inspired me to finally start my own blog!

Maya McDonald of Charmingly Styled is an absolute girl boss and the sweetest, most amazing big sister I never had. I was Maya's blogger intern the summer of 2014 and I truly learned so much from her about the blogging world. She always encouraged me to start my own blog but quite frankly I was just too scared. I had no clue where to start, what my angle would be, or what I would even post about!

Fast forward two years and to be honest, I still am scared to start this blog! However, this time around it is the right mix of scared, excited, inspired, and determined. Maya has always believed in me and encouraged me to showcase my illustrations and designs. So I decided now is the time to go for it and use this blog as a platform to share my designs.

A couple weeks ago I was in Chicago visiting Maya and she snapped some pictures of me while we were out and about enjoying the perfect fall day. It was so great to be collaborating, but now both as bloggers! I thought, "What better way to kick off my blog than with a photo shoot with Maya!?" So thank you, Maya, for your encouragement, knowledge, wisdom, and kindness over the years and for believing in me as a blogger even before I knew that's what I wanted to be. I look forward to many more collaborations (and brunch dates and shopping sprees) in the future!

Also, a quick thank you to all of the people who encourage and support me on a daily basis and made this blog possible! Thank you to my boyfriend, Ben, my family (mom, dad, brother, sister, grandmas, cousins), my amazing friends (Courtney Pelot, Cassie Sterwald, Emma Conklin, Taylor Fredrick, Kelsey Knorr, Anna Bolwerk), my first sewing instructor and mentor, Nichole Schneider, my fellow designers for creating a supportive community (Sarah Nasgowitz, Eleanor Fink, Emma Conklin, Erin Schulenberg, Andie Gechtman) and finally to the blogging community that I am grateful and excited to be a part of!

Now that you know what inspired me to start my blog, what inspired you to start yours? Even if you don't have a blog, who inspires you on a daily basis? A family member or a close friend? Maybe a boss or a mentor? A celebrity? I think we all can agree Beyonce is the ultimate role model because let's be honest, she is Queen B after all. ;)

Also, I recently got the chance to sit down with Courtney Pelot, Miss Wisconsin 2016, to chat about my fashion designs and new blogging adventure. The interview is just below so make sure to scroll down and read it! If you want to check it out a different time, I also have it in the About section here on my website.

Please comment and share what YOU would like to see here on the blog whether that be a specific theme or inspiration or design. This blog is just as much about you as it is about me!

Thanks so much for stopping by and I cannot wait to hear from all of you!

xoxo

Madalyn Joy

Courtney Pelot, Miss Wisconsin 2016, interviewed Madalyn Joy about her fashion designs and new blogging adventure. Read below what the girls chatted about from design to beauty to personal style and all things fashion!

Courtney Pelot: Let us get started! Tell me, what made you want to be a designer? Was there a particular moment where it all clicked?

Madalyn Manzeck: The moment that I remember most distinctly was when I was 12 years old (6th grade) in the car with my mom. It somehow came up in conversation and she asked, “So you don’t know what fashion magazines are? You mean you've never heard of Vogue? Not even designers like Chanel, Dior and Versace?” And I just looked at her like she was speaking a foreign language; I had never heard of any of this! So a couple days later she went and bought me my very first Vogue magazine and I remember flipping through the glossy pages, thinking, "Wow, this is a whole other magical world that I had no idea about!" So my fate was sealed since then.

CP: What was the first garment you designed and constructed?

MM: The first garment I made was my prom dress junior year. I was 16-17, and I had worked on it for about 7 months. That was the first time I had really made a pattern to fit me with the help from my sewing instructor, Nichole. It was a red satin mermaid style gown with a lipstick print lining. I was inspired by old Hollywood glamour: Grace Kelly, Marilyn Monroe, sparkly diamonds, red lipstick—the whole essence of femininity and beauty. I was so proud when people asked, “Oh, where did you get your dress?” and I could proudly say that I had made it.

CP: You have a very distinct personal style and design aesthetic. Tell me about that and how that came to be?

MM: Well, when I was in preschool I thought I wanted to be a nun. Which was weird because I wasn’t even Catholic! So my mom was like “Ok, good for you. But, you’re not Catholic...” When I look back, it was really the nuns' habits (outfits) I loved. I was drawn to the pristine black and white look. I know it sounds ridiculous—why would a little four-year-old want to become a nun? It’s the funniest thing! I’ve always had a very classic, minimalist style. I’m trying to really take classics, but put a spin on them. For example, I really like Olivia Palermo because she does that. She’ll have a white button-down, but it’ll be a unique design or she’ll style it in a different way. So, I’m really trying to embody that mentality.

CP: What has been your biggest accomplishment to date in terms of designing?

MM: I would say that there are two things. The first one is the YMA Scholarship I won just because I worked so hard to get it. I learned about it a year before I could even apply for it and I worked really hard and kept bothering my professors, asking when could I apply for this. I was chosen by my professors and I won the scholarship so I got to go to New York and have an incredible experience at the gala. The YMA organization also helped me get my internship so that was all very exciting. I would also say my senior thesis collection: Madalyn Joy Lingerie. That was really exciting to just make a collection for the first time versus individual projects. Seeing your collection walk down the runway is a very rewarding experience.

CP: You have always been a go-getter and #girlboss. What made you decide to pursue this blog and go this route a few months after college life?

MM: I have always loved blogs. I think they’re a really unique platform to showcase your personal style, lifestyle, food, whatever it may be. For me, it’s my designs. I was always scared because everyone else had one; I didn’t know how to make mine unique and still there are millions of fashion blogs. What makes mine unique is that it is a way to show off my designs and have a creative outlet that is fun. So, if I decide to do something more corporate, I still have this creative outlet.

CP: Why is your personal brand and blog innovative and unique?

MM: Good question! My entire blog is dedicated to my designs so everything you see on the blog, minus a few speciality items and accessories, are my designs that I made myself. I also try to make my designs fanciful yet wearable. The whole point of this blog is to show that you can make this amazing woven poncho that took months to make, but it doesn’t have to just sit in your closet collecting dust. You can wear it every day with a turtleneck and jeans and show it off to the world. Essentially, my inspiration for this mentality comes from Anna Winter's first Vogue cover where she paired an exorbitantly expensive couture jacket with a pair of jeans and it was truly revolutionary.

CP: I’ve always been interested in schedules and what a productive #girlboss does to get things done. I’d love to learn what a day in the life of Madalyn Joy is like. Tell me what your typical daily schedule looks like.

MM: Well, I wake up and always coffee first. I always like to say “I drink the coffee and then I do things.” It’s so true. I then check in with everyone from Ben to my family and friends and see what they are up to that day. I check my emails and social media to see the news of the day and what’s all going on. Most times then in the morning I’ll do errands, whether that means going to Target or Joann’s to get fabric or supplies I need for different projects. I feel like I’m the most productive in the afternoon/evening work wise you know after I’m fed and not hangry. I spend time in my little sweatshop, work on sewing, whether that be estimates for projects, sketches, inspiration, talking to clients or just actual sewing. I like to work in blocks of time for sewing because I get more done that way. I’ll then have dinner and watch a little tv or Netflix or read a book. Again, I’ll check on social media to see what other people are wearing, doing, eating, traveling, etc.

CP: What’s your morning beauty routine? What products do you use every day?

MM: I recently just got more into beauty now that I have more time post-college. I have started Birchbox again. They really know what’s up and coming. I like Avene. It’s a skincare company based out of France. They have a thermal spring water spray. Fun fact: This thermal spring water spray helps with sensitive skin and burns. So when the Chicago fire happened, they sent their products to patients there. They have this whole skincare line that I found through Birchbox. I fell in love with their facial mist and also a serum because it’s lightweight and helps with sensitive skin. I also recently learned that you should start using eye cream in your 20s. I use an eye cream from Acure; it’s all organic, all natural. I’m really trying to get rid of all parabens and plastics because I have this irrational, yet rational, fear of getting cancer. And of course, makeup. I really like my new Diorshow mascara, Stila matte red lipstick, Nars blush, and my lip enhancing balm from Jouer that I love.

CP: How about your nighttime routine? Any special products you use?

MM: I always like to shower at night. I use the face wash from Nars and I typically put my serum on at night in addition to items from the Beautycounter collaboration with Target. It is a facial moisturizer and eye cream and I like to let both moisturize overnight.

CP: What keeps you motivated and inspired to work hard and get ahead?

MM: I’ve been having a struggle with this recently since I’m not in school anymore and I don’t have the motivation of deadlines. Since having the epiphany that I wanted to start this blog, I have been more determined. I think it’s very important to have projects you love, even if that’s outside of your work, because you need to have things that you’re passionate about.

CP: Ok, now I want to know some of your favorites.
